The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached a critical stage, with a dire need for resources and a coordinated response that seems to be falling short. A month after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international emergency, the situation is far from under control. The Bundibugyo strain, a rare and deadly variant, has already infected over 800 people, with the potential to surpass the devastating 2014-16 West Africa epidemic. This crisis is not just a medical emergency but also a logistical and security challenge, with deep implications for the region's health and stability.
In my opinion, the scale of this outbreak is particularly concerning due to its urban setting and the insecurity present in the affected areas. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention's (Africa CDC) director general, Jean Kaseya, highlights the critical issue of reaching all contacts and suspected cases. With tens of thousands of contacts untraced, the response is playing catch-up, and the situation is only getting more dire. The fact that identified cases are not always isolated and cared for is a major setback, and the lack of resources, from ambulances to construction materials, is hindering the efforts to contain the outbreak.
One of the most striking details is the shortage of supplies, from Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to gravel, which is delaying the construction of isolation wards. The absence of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), dismantled by President Trump, is a notable gap in the response. The U.S., the biggest donor, has asked others to contribute, but the African Union has received only a fifth of the funding for its $518 million response plan. This funding shortfall is a significant obstacle, especially when considering the need for almost everything from PPE to gravel.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that medics are lacking essential supplies, and dozens have already contracted the Bundibugyo strain. The lack of a proven vaccine or treatment for this strain adds to the urgency of the situation. The WHO report showing that a third of alerts about new suspected cases were not being followed up is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the response teams. The need for more resources and a coordinated effort is clear, but the question remains: will it be enough to prevent a catastrophic outcome?

The scale of this outbreak demands a robust and sustained response, and the consequences of inaction could be devastating. The DRC and the region cannot afford to wait for the outbreak to become the worst on record.
